IRIS
Bio-mimicry Lighting
Fall 2017
1 Week
Cad Project
Iris began as an exercise in Solidworks and keyshot modeling. This project involved improving upon a furniture item within the modern household. This involved research of the current market as well as user research and the creation of a persona.
Iris was inspired by nature and its form was developed using bio-mimicry.
Ideation
Refinement and Modeling
Since the project was in such a short timeframe we had to move quickly from ideation to modeling. The purpose of this was to get a sufficient idea of proportion, materiality, and flat-pack capabilities. The parts were made from bass wood and black acrylic, cut on a laser cutter. In total we had over 60 pieces.
Final
After the model was tested I made changes to the model so that it would more effectively use less material. This led to the final configuration of the lamp that would be known as IRIS.
IRIS was started as an aesthetic redesign of current lighting solutions. With some research, an opportunity space was recognized and targeted in order to create a unique and interesting product that was both aesthetic as well as functional.
